Yom Hazikaron at Immanuel College

Yom Hazikaron l’Chalalei Ma’arachot Israel ve’Nifgaei PeulotHa’eivah is Israel’s official Memorial Day. On Wednesday 30thApril, Immanuel College pupils and staff attended a most memorable and moving assembly to commemorate this day, remembering the soldiers and civilians who have given their lives in defence of the State of Israel, as well as the 7th October’s terror victims and hostages still being held in captivity in Gaza.

The impactful assembly, prepared and organised by Mrs Sadeh-Ginzburg and Mr Levey, was led bythe Head Boy and Head Girl Joel and Annabelle. Special prayers and poems that reflected the mood of the day were beautifully recited by Year 12 students Jonah, Amalya, Shani, Estelle, Jacob, Tamara, Jessica and Mrs. Sadeh-Ginzburg and Mr. Levey. Former Head Boy, Eliav, and Jacob impressed the audience with their singing of El Maleh Rachamim and Acheinu. Eliane Levi beautifully sang Etzlenu Bagan by Shaylee Atary, while Izzy Samuelsperformed exceptionally Hurricane, which was the Israeli entry to the 2024 Eurovision contest, and was sang by Eden Golan.

The College was honoured to welcome Aaron Bours from Beit Halochem as guest speaker and the entire school was touched and inspired as he shared his personal story as a lone soldier fighting in Gaza with injuries and recoveries.

Aaron’s resilience and determination became a source of inspiration to those around him and he has taken on the role of an ambassador for Beit Halochem, sharing his experience with international audiences.

Pupils and staff left the assembly appreciating how important it is for us to do our part and pay our respects to the soldiers and citizens who sacrificed their lives so that we can live proudly and safely as Jews and so that the State of Israel may continue to thrive and prosper. The one wish we all keep praying for is for the hostages to be all released and to be brought home as soon as possible.
