Staff Structure

Director of Pastoral Education

Beth Kerr is Director of Pastoral Education in Years 7-11.  She is responsible for the implementation of the College’s behaviour-management and anti-bullying policies and for child protection issues. She has a watching brief on pupil behaviour and its impact on learning.  She has oversight of the entire pastoral system and, together with the Heads and Assistant Heads of Section, develops the systems that monitor pupils’ achievement, effort and behaviour.  Beth is responsible for pupils’ reports and for the provision of information about individual pupils.

The Form Tutor

The form tutor is the key person in the pupil’s development at Immanuel College.  The tutor is the link between the school and home and between the pupil and other staff (teaching and support) in the school.   The tutor is responsible for the general educational and social development of pupils in the tutor group.

Tutors play a central role in monitoring and supporting pupils. They help to develop the pupil’s sense of belonging to the Immanuel community and they encourage pupils to be reflective by reviewing their progress on a regular basis. They assist pupils in setting challenging and achievable targets. Other colleagues rely on tutors to have knowledge and understanding of each of the pupils in their group. Sharing this information ensures staff have essential knowledge about the pupils whom they teach, thereby helping to ensure that the curriculum and the learning environment are appropriate for all students.

Head of Section/Year

In Years 7 to 11, the Heads of Sections and their Assistants lead the team of form tutors who are responsible for the welfare, behaviour, personal development and academic progress of the pupils in each year group. In the Sixth Form, the Second Deputy Head Master undertakes the role of the Director of Sixth Form.

The Heads of Sections and their Assistants advise form tutors about the best ways of supporting and responding to pupils who require particular guidance or monitoring and see some individual pupils on a regular basis. Decisions about placing pupils on academic, behavioural or organisational report, arranging a staff mentor for pupils or referring pupils to the School Counsellor are taken as a result of consultation between the Director of Pastoral Care, the Heads of Sections/Assistant Heads of Sections and the form tutors.

Heads of Sections and their Assistants arrange meetings with parents and form tutors and respond to parental requests for meetings. The Head of Section takes the decision to give a pupil an after-school detention for reasons other than work or specific subject area issues, e.g. homework or behaviour in a particular subject.

The Heads of Sections/Assistant Heads of Sections organise regular year group assemblies that may act as showcases for the talents and achievements of the year, as well as an opportunity for rewarding good effort and behaviour, promoting service to others and fostering worthwhile recreational activity.

The Heads of Sections/Assistant Heads of Sections write a report each year on the effort, attitudes and achievements of pupils in their year group.
