Social Action Projects
The Immanuel Social Action Programme takes as its inspiration the concept of “Tikkun Olam” (literally, “world repair”). The phrase Tikkun Olam means that Jews not only have the responsibility to create a model society among themselves but also should strive to repair the imperfections of society as a whole.
Manna from Heaven
In September 2007, Immanuel College launched an exciting project called “Manna from Heaven.” The project, run by Year 10 and 11 pupils, aims to make sandwiches with a variety of fillings, along with an Israeli salad and a portion of fruit, on a weekly basis for people in the Watford New Hope Trust, a shelter for the homeless.
Previous projects:
Mitzvah Day took place last year on Sunday the 20th of November. Many of our Immanuel students took part in a variety of different activities. The lower school students created Chanukah cards in a programme organised by British ORT, whereby they exchanged cards with a Jewish school in the Ukraine. Members of the Sixth Form organised a rota and stoically stood all day outside Koshernet and Tesco in Edgware asking customers for food donations for needy people in the community.
Additionally, representatives from throughout the school have been visiting the Princess Alexandra Old Age home in Stanmore during the year. Whilst there, they chatted to the residents, playing instruments and even sang! On the 10th of May, Year 8 and 9 pupils will visit the Edgware Day Care Centre, run by Jewish care, to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere and give something back to their local community.
On the 29th of February, JLGB ran a Sixth Form Volunteer fair in the JKT (Joyce King Theatre). Many different charities such as All Aboard, Tsedek and World Jewish Relief set up stalls detailing the various projects they have created for the forthcoming year. Students were able to hear more about each charity from the representatives and could sign up to give their time to a future event or activity planned by the organisations.
Ongoing projects:
• The Alan Senitt Community Leadership Programme for Year 10 pupils
• The Yoni Jesner Award Scheme where pupils in Year 8 accumulate around 20 hours of volunteering work. This will culminate in a prestigious award ceremony in June attended by the Chief Rabbi and Eric Pickles MP (Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government)
