School Council

A school must be able to change and adapt if it is to meet the needs of its constantly changing pupil body. Immanuel is not a rigid and old-fashioned school. Our school is a family and through the School Council each member of this family can play a part in ensuring it stays vibrant and up-to-date.

The School Council is a team of pupils who assemble once a fortnight to discuss agnda items suggested by pupils. Each form group within the School, excluding the Sixth Form which has its own council, has two elected representatives. These pupils have the job of bringing their form's ideas and suggestions to meetings and of reporting the matters discussed at the Council to their forms. The meetings are led by myself, David Gee - Director of School Council - as well as by Joseph Hyman - Deputy Chairman of School Council. Each meeting is attended by Mr. Skelker, our Head Master, so that the staff body and the Governors can be informed about the changes we would like to see in school life.

Any matters the representatives bring to meetings are readily discussed and each idea is challenged to expose its flaws and evaluate its practicality. Issues discussed recently at School Council include environmental concerns, such as recycle bins in class rooms and on campus, litter and waste management, alterations to the school timetable, the need  for school lunches on short Fridays, requests for new sports equipment and even the setting up of a charitable tuck shop at school.
