Scholarships

The College invites applications from the parents of pupils applying for admission to Year 7 for Immanuel Jakobovits Scholarships and Art and Music Exhibitions.

AWARD OF IMMANUEL JAKOBOVITS SCHOLARSHIPS

The successful candidate for an Immanuel Jakobovits Scholarship will be bright, eager and enquiring, with a keen interest in both secular and Jewish learning. He or she will have a variety of interests and show, in an age-appropriate way, a concern for the welfare of others both within and outside the College community.

Parents completing the application form should indicate whether they wish their son or daughter to be considered for an Immanuel Jakobovits Scholarship.

All candidates for admission will sit one-hour entrance examinations in English and Mathematics and will be invited to interview between the receipt of their application form and mid-February 2010. Scholarship candidates will sit an additional hour-long paper in Jewish Studies. Details of the subjects to be examined in the Jewish Studies Scholarship Paper and a specimen paper are available from Mrs Denise Rodgers, the College Admissions Secretary or is available by dowloading a specimen paper here.

10 scholarships will be offered to the value of 50% of fees, re-awarded throughout the recipient’s school career subject to satisfactory effort and behaviour.

Bursaries

Parents of candidates to whom a scholarship is offered may apply for a means-tested bursary. It is intended to award up to three bursaries to a maximum of full fees.

IMMANUEL COLLEGE MUSIC EXHIBITIONS

Immanuel College nurtures a deep understanding and enjoyment of music. The College has singing groups, a wind band, jazz groups and chamber ensembles, all of which perform at a high level. With the introduction of Band Method, by which all Year 7 entrants have the opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument loaned by the College at a nominal charge, the ground has been prepared for further developments in music at Immanuel.

There is one Music Exhibition available annually to new entrants to the School and is available to pupils entering Year 7. Each exhibition is worth £2,000 annually. Music Exhibitions will also provide free tuition in the candidate's principal instrument throughout his or her time at Immanuel. Exhibitions will be re-awarded annually subject to satisfactory effort and behaviour.

INSTRUMENTAL AWARDS

Uniquely, all Year 7 pupils receive instrumental awards for their first year at the School as part of the Band Method. These cover all but £75 per term of the cost of a year's tuition. For admission to Band Method, enthusiasm and regular attendance at lessons and rehearsals are required. A similar award will be made annually to a pupil who needs to study a second instrument in order to gain admission to a specific music college or university.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS FOR MUSIC EXHIBITIONS

For candidates aged 11+, the minimum standard of the main instrument or voice should be Associated Board Grade 4 or equivalent. Knowledge of a second instrument is advantageous, but at this age potential is often as important as achievement.

AUDITIONS

The aim of the audition is to discover as much about the musical ability and potential of the candidate as is possible in approximately thirty minutes. To this end, candidates will be required to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument and, where possible, one on the second-study instrument. Scales, arpeggios and sight-reading relevant to the candidate's level of musical achievement will also be required. The audition will conclude with some aural tests and a few general questions about the candidate's musical interests. The School will provide an accompanist where necessary (requests should be made for the accompanist no later than one week prior to audition with a copy of the accompaniment). Candidates should bring a spare copy of the accompaniment with them to the auditions.

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS

All successful applicants will be required to have lessons with the College's team of peripatetic teachers, according to instrument, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

OTHER INFORMATION

Music Exhibitioners are expected to take an active part in all the School's musical activities. They will be required to join orchestras, choirs and chamber ensembles as appropriate and to set an example to other members of these groups. They will be required to perform in the College's concerts on a regular basis, both in ensembles and as soloists and must give priority to the School's musical activities. Music Exhibitioners will also be expected to continue with academic Music until the end of Year 11. Candidates who have not already begun to study a second instrument will be required to do so after consultation between parents and the Director of Music.

The Director of Music would be pleased to meet interested parents and to arrange to hear prospective Exhibitioners play, in an informal manner, at any time in the College year. Appointments may be made and further details obtained by calling the School Office on 020 8955 8900.

IMMANUEL COLLEGE ART EXHIBITIONS

Immanuel College has a well-established and thriving Art Department. All pupils take art for the first three years and many do extra art at the Art Club. At the end of Year 9, pupils may choose art as a GCSE option and later, if they wish, proceed to A Level. Many of our A Level students proceed to some of the country’s leading art colleges, including Central Saint Martins and Chelsea.

The first three years in the Art Department are devoted to developing the pupils' abilities in observational drawing, painting, mixed media and 3D work. Pupils are encouraged to research ideas and work creatively. All pupils keep a hard-backed logbook throughout the first three years that not only reflects the pupils' work and progress but which also becomes a work of art in itself. Pupils may keep the logbook when they finish Year 9.

To qualify for an Art Exhibition, candidates must demonstrate enthusiasm for art, developed drawing ability and creativity in handling a variety of materials. Candidates for Art Exhibitions are invited to bring portfolios of work undertaken in the last few years to an interview with the Head of Art. We shall be looking at the students' potential rather than expecting highly finished work.
