Learning Support
The Teaching and Learning Department is one of Immanuel College’s most vital resources. The aim of the department is to help those pupils with specific learning difficulties to understand and master the aspects of the curriculum they find challenging and to support pupils to become confident and independent learners. We offer tuition and guidance to pupils and work closely with subject teachers about how best to support them in classroom.
The breadth of experience and qualifications of its specialist staff enable the department to identify and address the specific needs of pupils who, for whatever reason, may not be achieving their full potential.
In Year 7, all new pupils are screened to identify possible and potential barriers to learning. In addition subject teachers, form tutors, and section heads may refer pupils to the department at any time during their school career for advice and support.
We help pupils to identify their strengths, improve organisational skills and offer advice on time management, note taking, essay-writing skills, revision strategies and examination techniques. Through its ability to recognise early and then remedy problems in learning, the department alleviates pupil and parental anxieties and helps our students to acquire a secure sense of their own worth essential to future success.
The department has an ‘open door’ policy and lunchtime ‘drop-in’ sessions in which pupils can seek advice and support from experienced staff.
Teaching takes place either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. The department is always pleased to offer advice and assistance to parents about their children’s learning profiles and about any study problems they may encounter.
