Israel Education

Life at Immanuel College is not just about the 8.30 to 4.05 school day, the core curriculum subjects and public examinations. Many of the important goals of an Immanuel education are achieved beyond the classroom. Pupils develop stronger and more confident characters and grow into compassionate and responsible adults by helping others both within and outside the school community.

Immanuel values its relationships with the Israeli universities, seminaries and yeshivot attended by a number of our school leavers during their gap year and with the hospitals, soup kitchens and children’s homes supported by pupils’ tzedakah (charity) projects. Immanuel College develops its pupils’ ability to act as advocates for Israel on university campuses.

Year 9 Israel Trip

The Year 9 Israel trip is a three-and-a-half week educational journey of a lifetime. Towards the end of the summer term, pupils travel the length and breadth of Israel visiting the locations of biblical events they have studied. Pupils gain first-hand insight into Israeli society and the challenges it faces.

Yom Hazikaron

Each year Immanuel pupils commemorate Yom Hazikaron under the guidance of the Ivrit department with a ceremony of prayer, song and poetry. We are joined by special guests such as the Chief Rabbi, the Ambassador of the State of Israel and members of the Israel Defence Forces.

 Yom Ha'atzmaut

Yom Ha'atzmaut at Immanuel College is celebrated with great verve and happiness. Pupils dress in blue and white, and often many pupils adorn themselves with Israeli flags. During morning tefillah, the additional Hallel prayers are recited and during the lunch break, there is a special Israeli lunch of falafel and pitta bread, which pupils can eat outside (in clement weather!). Sixth Form pupils will arrange a charity fair, Israel-orientatied activities such as a quiz and dancing.

Learning Ivrit

Why is Modern Hebrew important at Immanuel College?

By Darryl Bernstein and Oliver Collins 10LRW

We have been learning Modern Hebrew since we started school in Year 7 and are currently studying it for our GCSE. We feel that Modern Hebrew is an essential part of our curriculum because it allows us to speak the language and converse with others in Israel, our Jewish state. From learning about everyday household conversations to talking about the issues that are uppermost in today’s society, we have learnt both how to speak Modern Hebrew and to understand its origin and true meaning.

Ivrit at Immanuel College is not just taught in order to prepare for examinations, but is taught so that we can carry on developing our knowledge of the language. Therefore, we will be able to use it in the future either for a simple trip to visit Israel or eventually to make Aliyah. Ivrit is very important in our lives, as it has enabled us to experience Jewish life in the way our ancestors would have wished us to, and carry on their traditions.
