Curriculum Information

Sport and Physical Education, including dance, are essential aspects of the curriculum and in recent years we have installed a fully equipped fitness suite, a large all-weather surface for tennis and netball and drained 11 acres of grounds to create state-of-the-art cricket and football pitches and facilities for field events and athletics.

Over twenty sports clubs meet weekly and College teams in badminton, table tennis, netball, basketball, athletics, tennis, football and cricket drawn from each year take part regularly in fixtures and tournaments, both on an intramural and extramural basis.

Drama, which is taught from Year 7 onwards, is well subscribed to at GCSE and Advanced Level and owes much of its popularity to the frequent school productions staged in the 300-seater Joyce King Theatre. Recent productions have included Macbeth, The Clouds, An Inspector Calls, Animal Farm, A Doll’s House, Blithe Spirit and perennial favourite Bugsy Malone. Casts for these productions are drawn from throughout the school.

Year 7 entrants to the College are invited to take part in the Band Method. This is a heavily subsidised scheme by which pupils receive tuition on the orchestral instrument of their choice, rehearse together weekly and perform at the three annual school concerts. These concerts, together with the yearly Music Festival, provide performance opportunities and indeed opportunities for personal growth and development.

The College also enjoys a tradition of excellence in the visual arts. The annual Art and Photography Show, at which the Gottlieb Trophy and its associated prizes are awarded, is one of the highlights of the Immanuel year. The destinations of our Upper Sixth leavers invariably include several places at the country’s leading Art schools.

“The relationships between pupils and teachers are unique. No teacher will ever refuse to give extra support; their commitment to the pupils is unrivalled by any school.”
Jonathan Kleiman, Head Boy 2008/09

“The Drama department at Immanuel is exciting, innovative, interesting and flourishing, and it generates a huge amount of school spirit. The high standards of teaching and my participation in school plays have encouraged me to fulfil my ambition of training to become an actress.”
Sasha Stock, Deputy Head Girl 2008/09 (member of the National Youth Theatre Summer 2008)
