English Examination

The paper consists of a comprehension exercise and an essay, and is one hour long.
Candidates will gain credit for careful presentation of their work and legible handwriting.
Candidates should write in blue or black ink.
 
In the comprehension exercise candidates will be tested on their understanding of the text and their analytical skills. When candidates write their essays they will have the chance to show imagination, to reflect on their own experience, and to display some degree of resourcefulness and range in their use of language.  They are expected to paragraph their work and to spell and punctuate accurately.  In particular candidates should be able to make appropriate use of full stops, capital letters, commas and inverted commas.

Mathematics Examination

The one-hour examination is designed to test mathematical potential and as such contains sums and problems that the candidates may not have seen before. 
 
The topics in mathematics candidates will be tested upon are:
Simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including long multiplication and division;
Measurement of length, area, perimeter and volume for simple rectangles and cuboids (no circles);
The metric system, including money, mass and length;
Simple decimals and fractions;
The time, including the 24-hour clock;
Understanding charts and diagrams.
 
Candidates should bring two sharp pencils, an eraser, a ruler, a protractor and compasses to the examination.
