In Years 9 to 11, top mathematicians Chana Bernstein, Aaron Rudolph, Joseph Berenson and Samuel Hilsenrath were invited to take part in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust European Kangaroo Mathematical Challenge. These pupils were chosen based on their exceptional scores in the UK Mathematics Challenge. Over 5.5 million students from 46 countries in Europe and beyond took part in the 2010 Kangaroo paper. Being invited to take part in the Kangaroo Challenge is an impressive accomplishment itself, and to top it off Chana Bernstein scored in the top 25% of the 5.5 million participants worldwide, a magnificent achievement.

Why not try your skill at a Kangaroo Challenge problem? A woodcutter chops logs in the forest. He chops one log at a time, splitting it into two smaller logs. Once the woodcutter has finished, he has made 53 chops and ended up with 72 logs. How many logs did he start with?
