Yoni Jesner Award Scheme Ceremony

Sunday, 26th June 2011

Fourteen students from Year 8 took part this year in the Yoni Jesner Award Scheme, a volunteering scheme which encourages pupils to help others in the local community, in memory of Yoni Jesner, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv at the age of 19. The year-long course culminated in a ceremony in the presence of the Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks at St Johns Wood Synagogue on Monday 6th June.

To complete the course, pupils had to undertake in the course of the year 20 hours of voluntary work spent, for example, visiting old-age homes and helping to pack clothes for GIFT. Activities were also organised during school time, including a mask-making activity before Purim; the masks were then delivered to an orphanage in Odessa.

The award ceremony was well attended by parents and pupils alike. The students were addressed by the Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks and by Ari Jesner, Yoni’s brother. They were presented with certificates by Lord Sacks and Yoni’s grandmother. At the conclusion of the ceremony, three Immanuel pupils gave inspiring speeches. Liat Oberlander (8LSW), said “ I have realised that giving can actually bring me more pleasure than receiving and I would really love to be involved in projects like this in the future,” and Danielle Shohet (8LSW) said, “it made me realise not only how lucky and privileged I am, but how difficult day-to-day living can be for some families.”
