Year 8 Independent Learning Projects

Thursday, 22nd January 2009

?Are iPods ruining the world?? and ?How would the world be different if 9/11 hadn?t happened?? are just two of the many questions chosen for exploration by Year 8 pupils taking part in the Independent Learning Project at Immanuel College.

Head of PSHE, Ms Laurel Endelman told me that ?The projects are an opportunity for pupils to carry out some independent learning and research on a non-curriculum topic of their choice, with guidance from teachers and parents. In addition, pupils develop their thinking and strategic skills. Interviewing people teaches them to articulate their ideas and their running project diary helps them to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses.?

Each pupil was given two months to research their chosen question, and the results of their findings were displayed this week at an exhibition at the College to which parents, teachers and pupils were invited. Parents had the opportunity to question pupils about what they had learnt during the course of the project.
