Year 10 Lady Jakobovits Visit
Wednesday, 8th July 2009
Year 10 Immanuel College pupils, were today privileged to have Lady Jakobovits, the widow of the late Chief Rabbi Lord Jakobovits, the founder of the College, come and speak about her experiences in World War II.
The account of her family?s escape from Paris before the German bombing assault began on the city, through Nice, and then over the border into Switzerland, and of their commitment to their Torah lifestyle throughout the journey, keeping kashrut, Shabbat, Yomim Tovim and the father rising to the challenge of finding a minyan to daven with, was one that captivated every pupil and staff member in the room.
Lady Jakobovits recalled times of hardship, sadness, and indeed happiness, when her mother gave birth to twins during the war, and concluded with a message that ?in every clamaity facing the Jewish people throughout history, Hashem has sent someone or some people who help to save the others. The Jewish people have special traits that ensure that we will always survive, and today, it is so special to see Jewish children, learning about their Judaism in such a wonderful Jewish school, so proud of being Jewish.?
