Visit to Handel House Museum
Wednesday, 23rd January 2008
The Year 10 and 11 GCSE Music groups visited the Handel House Museum in Brook Street, Mayfair recently. During the morning, pupils studied some of Handel?s compositional techniques with John Haberner, (Professor of Music, Southampton University). Pupils then sang the ground basses and variations they had composed and received feedback on their efforts.
Later that morning, pupils enjoyed a guided tour of the house, which has been restored to the condition of Handel?s residency there, (1723 ? 1759). As a result the pupils now know every detail about his house down to the colour and length of his bedroom curtains!
Unusually the pupils were then given a guided tour of the house next door, which currently serves as the museum offices. This house is noteworthy because it is where Jimi Hendrix lived between 1966 and 1970.
Pupils expressed delight in all aspects of the day and the visit will have certainly enhanced their knowledge and understanding of the components of the GCSE syllabus relating to these great musicians.
