Sukey Parnell Sixth Form Photography Workshop

Thursday, 3rd December 2009

Rachel Gaon, Year 13, tells us why visiting photographer, Sukey Parnell was an inspiration to her.

Sukey Parnell was an inspiration to me because of her enthusiasm for her photography, her quirky and unusual ideas and the encouragement she gave me and my fellow students last week.  The structure of the day was in three parts. First, she presented an impressive slideshow of her recent work with insightful explanations. Many of us asked questions about her techniques and the way she created such unusual pieces of work.

During the second stage, Sukey taught us what a studio photo shoot is like. Using a couple of my fellow students as models we watched her take portraits and then she showed us the different effects varied lighting makes to a photograph. We also learnt about her different cameras and contrasting light sources.

The final stage focused on applying what we had learnt from Sukey and the techniques she showed us to the requirement to include a self-portrait in our coursework. I really appreciated the time she spent looking at my work; she uncovered a pattern within my work and gave me helpful tips, as well as suggesting ideas for my studio shoot.

Overall, I really enjoyed this stimulating and worthwhile day. We all gained from it, whether in the areas of technique, lighting or approaches to portraiture.

I am immensely keen to go into “the creative world” and I gained a lot from this opportunity to meet Sukey and learn about her work.
