Wednesday, 2nd July 2008

Two Year 8 Immanuel College students nominated the winning book at the 2007/8 Book Award in a recent vote by all staff and students. Emma Gold and Hannah Harris nominated Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, one of the six books that were short-listed by a committee made up of students, staff and parents.

Over 600 students and staff at the school were asked to read the six books and choose their winner of the year-long project, which aims to promote an interest in reading among students.

Elsewhere, is an inspirational story of learning to live with loss and tragedy and was voted from among the shortlist, which also included well-known books such as The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Philip Skelker, Headmaster of Immanuel College, commented: ?The book award is an excellent opportunity for students to widen their imaginations and improve on their English skills. Thank you to Janet Leifer, our head librarian, for introducing the project in 2004. I look forward to its continued success for many years to come.?

Emma Gold and Hannah Harris, year 8, said: ?We are so happy to have nominated the winning book. It is an incredible book, after you have read from the first page to the last you will want to read it again backwards!?
