Senior Prize Day

Tuesday, 10th November 2009

Never before has a speaker during one of the College’s prize days received a standing ovation from all parents and pupils present. At the end of Gill Hicks’s speech all who were present were touched and inspired by her moving account of her survival of the bombings on the 7th of July 2005. There was no bitterness or hatred to be found in Gill’s stirring account of the attack and the arduous but positive journey she has taken to be where she is today. Gill described the love and care given to her on that day of the attack by the medics that surrounded her and the continued love given to her by those that aided her recovery. She refused to apportion blame to anyone and clearly has used this experience to fight for what she most believes in: peace. Our pupils were totally engaged by Gill and, in their usual articulate fashion, asked many searching and intelligent questions that Gill responded to in detail and with real enthusiasm. There was a very real connection between our guest and our pupils and one left the Prize Day feeling enriched and humbled by this astoundingly heroic person who has much to teach us all.
