Prominent Peer Addresses Immanuel College's "Future Politicians"
Monday, 19th May 2008
The Liberal Democrat Leader in the House of Lords, the Rt. Hon. Lord Tom McNally, visited Immanuel College to speak to sixth formers as part of the House of Lords ?Peers in Schools? programme.
Lord McNally, who has been involved in politics for over thirty-five years, gave an informative talk, followed by a lively question and answer session, about the work and the role of the House of Lords. Students heard about the relationship between the Commons and the Lords as well as some of the bills currently under debate.
The ?Peers in Schools? programme, established just over a year ago by the Lord speaker of the House of Lords, the Rt. Hon. Baroness Hayman, was created to teach young members of society the role of the government and the effect it has on their lives.
Philip Skelker, Headmaster of Immanuel College commented: ?It is important for students to be fully informed of the society in which they live in and a better understanding of our political institutions will only enhance this. We are privileged to have heard from such an esteemed member of Parliament and thank Lord McNally for providing us with such an informative talk.?
Rt. Hon. Lord Tom McNally said: ?The 'Peers in Schools' programme is part of a wider outreach policy by the House of Lords to make people, and particularly young people, aware of the work of the Upper House as well as its history and possible future. It is particularly satisfying when one visits a school like Immanuel College and find the students interested in public affairs and articulate in expressing that interest.?
