Newly formed Israel Society
Monday, 10th December 2007
The Israel Society, set up this term by a group of keen Lower Sixth Form students, catered for Year 7 pupils in the first instance. After its launch at a Year 7 assembly, it has met weekly on Thursday lunchtime, attracting regular attendances of some 30 pupils.
Each week?s meeting is on a different theme: so far these have included: immigration/kibbutzim; chalutzim; the War of Independence; David Ben Gurion and the Negev, and the Annapolis conference. To convey the educational content of each meeting, activities are fun and action-packed. For example when trying to explain the role of the Haganah as the defence force of Israel, (as opposed to the Irgun or Stern Gang), the organisers issued pupils with raw eggs, supplies of kitchen paper, zip-lock bags and small boxes. Teams then had to wrap their eggs as carefully as possible in order to ?defend? them from the ultimate test ? a short drop to the floor. The team whose eggs survived won (and the Sixth Formers cleared up!)
Children earn ?air miles? when they attend the group and a prize for best attendance will be awarded later in the year. In the last week of term to accompany the ?Peace? theme, the Israel Society provided ice-creams for all who attended.
The aim of the Israel Society is not just to educate about Israel through enjoyable activities, but also to create an additional opportunity for Sixth Formers and younger pupils to learn together.
