New Mezuzot for Immanuel Preparatory School

Tuesday, 14th June 2011

Parents of the first Reception class at the Immanuel College Preparatory School which will be opening this September, were invited to a mezuzah ceremony in the newly refurbished Reception classroom on Tuesday 14th June.

Mr Michael Gillis, Head of Biblical Hebrew at the senior school, fixed the mezuzah in place and commented on the use of Veshinantam Levanecha in the first paragraph of the Shema. He explained, “The normal form of the verb ‘to teach’ would have been ‘velimadetam’ (and you will teach them) but ‘veshinantam’ (and you will teach them diligently) comes from a root which suggests ‘sharpness’. This”, said Mr Gillis “is the essence of education – it is not enough to simply pass on the information to the children but the goal is to instil in them intellectual sharpness so that eventually they will be able to learn independently and grow both in their Jewish and secular studies.”

Head Master, Mr Philip Skelker, concluded, “the essence of the shema is what we strive for children to achieve at our school. Immanuel College provides an excellent academic education, together with an inspiring Jewish education, whilst teachers give individual attention to every single pupil through an expert pastoral care system. We hope that pupils in our new Preparatory School will be as successful and happy as their counterparts are in the senior school.”
