New Building Takes School into the Future

A ground-breaking ceremony on Tuesday 23rd February whas officially marked the start of the building works for Immanuel College.
The building, an 8-classroom block costing nearly £1m is planned for the new school year in September 2010. Contractors Jarvis Contracting Ltd. have been on site from Monday 22nd February but the first ‘official dig’ was made at 8:50a.m. this morning, Tuesday 23rd February, by principal guest, Mr Mick Davis, Chief Executive of Xstrata Plc., Chairman of the UJIA and a member of the Jewish Leadership Council. The building has been designed with multi-functional applications. The classrooms will be able to be reconfigured to give small or large teaching areas and an examination hall.
Chair of Governors, Dr Sara Levene said “We are investing for the future of Immanuel College. This new block will add state of the art facilities to the campus to benefit pupils now and in the years to come”.
Addressing the pupils and staff in an assembly following the ceremony, Mr Davis explained why he has a deep founded belief in Jewish Schools in general and Immanuel College in particular. He explained, “Jewish school do not create separateness, but rather help nurture a value of service to society and one’s fellow man.”
Head Teacher Mr Philip Skelker said: “This is an extremely exciting time for us. We have seen a great increase in the level of student achievement in recent years and the new building is central to in the next phase of our development.”
