Launch of Social Action Projects
Wednesday, 5th November 2008
Immanuel College launched its social action projects for the coming year at a special assembly this week.
Against the backdrop of a bold audio-visual presentation urging pupils to perfect the world, ?SOCIAL ACTION: it?s your turn to change the world ? SO ACT?, Rabbi David Riffkin, Director of Judaism, told pupils the story of Rachel Rosenfeld in America. Prevented from going to school for a year due to illness, Rachel did not mope, but instead raised $52,000 to build a new school in Cambodia. Rabbi Riffkin urged the pupils, ?Kum Ve?aseh? ?Rise up and make a difference.?
Pupils were invited to take part in three projects; Ariella Lew from Camp Simcha asked pupils to put the charity?s motto, ?Today?s treat helps you get through tomorrows treatment?, into practice by buying toys for children in hospital over Chanukah.
Wearing his champion sandwich-maker apron, Year 11 pupil Mossy Wittenberg enthusiastically announced that the joys of making sandwich lunches for the local homeless would be experienced this academic year by each form in term. Laura Marks whose idea it was to bring Mitzvah Day to the UK invited pupils to take part in Mitzveh Day 2008, November 16th in one of three ways: Mitzvah Day Shopping, ? encouraging others to buy extra food for the needy in Kosher shops, - visiting a Jewish Care Home, and helping at the World Jewish Relief Packathon.
Philip Skelker, Head Master, comments, ?The Social Action programme gives pupils the chance to help others less fortunate than they are. I am proud of the contribution they make to old age homes, hostels for the homeless and schools for children with disabilities.?
