Immanuel Students Take Part in Tzedek's Novel Global Citizenship Programme

Thursday, 28th February 2008

Students at Immanuel College took part in Tzedek?s first ever Jewish Global Citizenship Project, a unique programme which aims to develop young people?s awareness and understanding of global ethical issues. The pilot project, which focuses on the themes of equality, sustainability, poverty reduction and education, uses interactive materials to help bring topics to life, including real-life case studies, pictures and film.

Over two hundred Immanuel Students, aged 11-14 years old, learnt about the issues surrounding ethical consumerism, investigating how they can become ethical consumers. Through exploration of Jewish texts on fairness and activism, pupils explored worker rights, learning through real life case studies about those involved in the clothing industry.

Students were asked to research different companies? commitment to fair-trade and worker rights. Pupils were then asked to write a letter to the company either congratulating them on their good work or asking why certain basic rights for their workers were not being met.

Philip Skelker, Headmaster of Immanuel College commented: ?It is important for students to learn about the world in which they live, and Tzedek?s valuable sessions invited our students to question things that they previously may have taken for granted. I am sure that this is the first of many explorations into global issues for some our students, and I look forward to Tzedek?s continued visits.?
