Double Olympic gold medalist Steve Williams visits Immanuel College
Thursday, 6th November 2008
Double Olympic Gold Winner and four-times World Champion Steve Williams, visited Immanuel College today, Thursday 6th November, to present awards to pupils at the school?s annual sports assembly.
On the day daubed ?Super Saturday? by the media, the 32-year-old, along with his crew mates in the men?s coxless four won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympic Games. This was Steven?s second Olympic gold medal. His first was won in Athens in 2004.
Steve visited Immanuel College to award medals and trophies at the assembly held each year to celebrate the achievements of the school?s sportsmen and women both in in-school competition, local school leagues and Maccabi tournaments.
Steve told the pupils: ?I was the least obvious person in my school to become a professional athlete ? I always came last in every race. It wasn?t until I was 13 and took up rowing that I discovered that I was good at a sport. Now, having won at the Olympics I don't feel that I have anything to prove; instead I think I have got everything to lose. Fear of failure has always been the biggest motivator for me and if it was missing then I would know it was time to stop rowing.?
Steve inspired the pupils during a question and answer session by telling them, ?winning a gold medal at the Olympics is a sacred and primeval experience; you don?t know beforehand how deep you have to dig inside of you to get the result.?
Head Master, Philip Skelker said: ?Steve William gave the pupils a resonant message: that with passion and determination, the fulfillment of their greatest ambitions is within their reach. His visit was an inspiration to us all?
