Author visit - Dan Freedman

Wednesday, 10th February 2010

Author Dan Freedman visited Immanuel College this morning, to speak to the Year 7 and 8 pupils about his career as a sports journalist and author of the teenage book series about Jamie Johnson, a boy who aspires to be a professional football player.

During his teenage years Dan saw his dream of becoming a professional footballer recede so he resolved to gain work experience in the sphere he loved best, football, - as a tea boy at Arsenal Football Club and Sky Sports. He then gained a foothold at the Football Association (FA) as a Customer Services officer, from which he spring boarded to the position of internal journalist and publicist for the FA website. Dan Freedman has travelled with the England Team to a European Championship and two World Cups, regularly interviewing the players for the website.

He was inspired to become an author after he tried to buy a novel about football for the 11 year old son of a friend who was football crazy, but discovered that there was nothing in the bookshops for that market.

He said, “I had never written a novel before, so it was rejected by the publishers. But, inspired by the Alan Shearers of this world who succeed in becoming professional players because of sheer determination, commitment and passion, I didn’t give up and eventually got my book published.”

Dan Freedman has now written three books in the ‘Jamie Johnson’ series, and he hopes to have two more books on our bookshelves this coming year.
