A Siyyum at Immanuel College

Wednesday, 25th March 2009

Year 10 boys from Immanuel College this week celebrated the completion of their learning of the Halachot of Aveilut at a Siyyum at school.

As part of their GCSE Jewish Studies Syllabus, Immanuel College Year 10 boys have been studying Ikkrei Emunah, learning about Briyat Ha?olam, the Neshama and Olam Haba. They have spent the past month in a detailed study of the Halachot and Minhagim of Aveilut from the sefer Shaarei Halacha and celebrated the completion of their studies this week with a siyyum.

Rabbi Meir Salasnik, Rabbi of Bushey and District United Synagogue was invited to test the boys on their knowledge, and he spoke to them about interesting aspects of the Halachot illustrated by fascinating incidents from his own family History.

Mr Michael Drucker, who taught the boys their course explained ?there were a number of reasons that I wanted to teach to boys in depth about this area of halacha; firstly ?if not now, then when? - If chas v?sholom there is a need for this knowledge, there is no time to learn it; secondly, the boys will be able to offer support and comfort to their families in times of distress by knowing what to do and what questions to ask to their Rabbi; and finally in empathy with the young people in Israel who have, unfortunately, become expert in this area of halacha in past years e.g. the atrocities that occurred in Mercaz Harav Yeshiva.?
