Physics

Studying Physics allows our students to explore the fundamental nature of almost everything we know of.  It provides them with the knowledge and experience to make sense of the world around them and also to probe a world deep beneath the surface of normal human experience. By providing the highest quality learning opportunities, the Department aims to foster an interest and understanding of the role Physics has had to play in creating and shaping our world. We aim to inspire and inform our students of how the theory and application of Physics can help build a better future for everyone, with every student leaving Immanuel College with a positive attitude towards the subject and having achieved the highest standards possible in their public exams.

The Science Department ethos is to nurture a genuine curiosity in, and a love for, Science in order to enable each pupil to reach their full potential. Each pupil is encouraged to discover their scientific talents through participation in, and contribution to, lessons and co-curricular activities. We encourage pupils to take responsibility for their progress and learning. In Years 7 & 8 Science is taught as general Science. From Year 9 onwards students get weekly dedicated Physics lessons. Physics is then taught as part of a Double Science GCSE or a single GCSE course and then at A-level.

We follow the Exploring Science Course at Years 7-9. This course provides a rigorous and challenging scientific content whilst at the same time developing the key skills successful Scientists need – an understanding of how to work scientifically, the literacy and communication skills to make sense of the world around us and the mathematical skills to process data effectively. In Year 7 classes are mixed ability and in Year 8 onwards pupils are put into sets. Each year receive four Science lessons per week.

Science is a core subject, which is studied by all pupils in the School up to GCSE. Pupils are prepared for either the AQA Double Science GCSE or the Edexcel IGCSE triple Science exams. Practical work is an important part of Science and students can expect to spend a large proportion of their time carrying out experiments, making measurements and observing, as well as covering theory and solving problems.

Physics is becoming an increasingly popular choice at A-level and many of our students then move on to university to study a Science-related discipline. We offer the AQA Physics course where students are taught in small groups, with 8 lessons per week. Students are expected to undertake a significant amount of self-directed study outside of the classroom which allows the Department to supplement their learning with plenty of opportunities to stretch and challenge them beyond the curriculum. As a result, our students are able to successfully compete at a national level in the Oxford University British Physics Olympiad, testing themselves against the best in the country.

The Department supports a series of co-curricular activities in lunchtimes and after school. These include Science Club, CREST awards, Robotics Club, 3-D Printing Club and trips to conferences and lectures. Our bi-annual trip to CERN provides an opportunity for our A-level students to experience Science at the cutting edge.
